Gorilla Party: City of Colours

We joined the City of Colours Festival in 2016 to host a craft party! We invited visitors to pink up and decorate the 7ft tall gorilla the team had made. This became our art installation at our first ever Etsy Made Local. It showcased materials and skills from different team members from leather, plastic, ceramics, crochet, surface patter design and poetry. Cass Art sponsored the art supplies to help bring pinkify him.

Why a Gorilla?

The gorilla was picked in homage to the King Kong statue created by Nicholas Munro in 1972. This sculpture was apart of a scheme for art in public spaces and was displayed by the Bullring in the Manzoni Gardens. It’s often now a ghost memory for people and yet it was displayed for only 6 months. When the city was offered the chance to buy it for £2,000 they declined and yet it is a most beloved statue. It moved around the city for the next 4 years having been bought by a local car dealer to advertise his business. It left the city in ‘76 and travelled to Scotland to be the mascot for an Edinburgh market where he was painted pink and tartan and white. Now he lies derelict in the owners garden.

The making of a gorilla!

Using chicken wire, scrap materials, gummed tape, newspapers, bungees and anything pink we problem solved recreating the Nicholas Munro sculpture at a meagre 7ft tall!
